There is a very good chance that the venue you have hired for your child’s party will have a kitchen, making it easier to prepare and offer hot food instead. I have noticed that this has become more popular, especially during the winter months. And let’s not forget, if you want to save on washing up, you’re going to need some disposable lunch boxes, cutlery, napkins, Table-cloth, and it goes without saying lots of tomato sauce!

Whilst we all know that Hot Dogs and Burgers are popular with the kids, why not have a go at making some homemade chicken nuggets or fish fingers instead? I realise they take a bit longer to prepare, but they taste so much better than bought products.

[box size=”large”]Guidelines[/box]

There are a number of things to think about if you want to lay on your own food at a children’s party. If this is your first time organising a child’s party, please use the guidelines below to help your day be less stressful!

  • Allergies – Food allergies are becoming commonplace these days. Whilst some are more severe than others, on rare occasions, they can prove to be fatal. Sending out your party invitations presents the perfect opportunity to ask parents for any allergy information you may need. By writing ‘Please delete appropriately – Does your child suffer from any food allergies? Yes/No’, you will know that if it comes back blank, it has been missed rather than that the child does not have an allergy. If you’re unsure, always double check with the parents before the day of your party.
  • Fussy Eaters – Kids are fussy eaters, fact! And the chances of coming across one at a party is high. However, if you’re going to offer hot food, a choice of two dishes and a vegetarian should be sufficient enough to prevent the cries of “I don’t like that!”But when it comes to laying on a cold buffet, the best way to prevent those cries  of “Yuk!”, are to have a selection of about eight to ten different dishes (not forgetting the crisps) and present them in a fun and unusual manner.
  • Preparation – Always allow plenty of time to prepare your food, it takes longer than you think. Unpacking and setting up at the venue will also take a bit of time. Don’t forget to allow time for setting up the tables and chairs too.Making arrangments before you turn up will ensure a greater chance of everything going smoothly on the day.
  • Disposables – After your party, the last you’re going to be thinking about is washing up! Where possible, try and buy as many disposables as you can. Plates, cups, napkins and cutlery are the main priority, but if you can afford them, disposable trays for the buffet can come in handy too.
  • Who’s ordered what? – It’s always a good idea to keep a track of the names of who’s ordered what. You can always guarantee on the day, somebody will change their mind or forget what they’ve ordered.
  • Budget – If you’re putting on a cold buffet, you may want to put a budget on the amount you spend. It can be easy to walk into a supermarket and buy everything on the shelve. If you limit your menu to between eight and ten different items, you should come in on both budget and variety.
  • Party Cakes
  • Allow plenty of time –  Setting up and clearing down a party will always take longer than you think. Remember, you’ve got to set the tables and seating up, as well as lay out the food and organise the kitchen. And then there’s the clearing down. Depending on the type of party you’ve had, this could take longer than you first anticipated.
  • Do a recce – Bearing in mind the point I’ve just made, this is a great way of getting organised. It will also give you the opportunity to find out what equipment is available, where it is stored and whether it’s in good working order.
  • Transportation – It really important to consider how you transport your food. Ensure the food is covered, secured and runs no risk of being contaminate during transportation.
  • Leaving food out at room temperature – Please remember that you are responsible for the food you supply at the party. Under current food regulations, food cannot be left out for any longer than four hours. Therefore, high-risk food such as cold meat etc needs to be discarded after this time.
  • Checklist – Don’t forget... Cake knife, candles, matches/lighter, plates, cutlery, utensils, bin bags, kitchen paper, napkins, drinks, cups, Food, Sauces and Dips, Party Bags, pinatas, contact numbers for parents that are leaving their children, food trays,
